It’s Not What I Want but Whether I Will

February 6, 2017

While I was in seminary I was struggling in my marriage, with personal disciplines, and with my studies.  It was during this time that God brought a mentor and friend into my life who challenged me to pay a price to really become all that God intended for me to be.  After he laid out what it would cost me to turn my life and marriage around, I said, “I am not sure if that is something that I want to do.”  His response to me was a defining moment for me that I often replay in my mind.  He said “the issue is not if you want to, the issue is “will you?”

“Disturb us, Lord, when we are too pleased with ourselves; when our dreams have come true because we dreamed too little; when we arrived safely because we sailed too close to the shore.

“Disturb us, Lord, when with the abundance of things we possess, we have lost our thirst for the waters of life.

Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly, to venture on wider seas where storms will show your majesty; where losing sight of land we shall find the stars.”

—Prayer of Vice Admiral Sir Francis Drake
